Type 302 (UNS S30200/1.4319)
- Superior to type 301 stainless steel in rust and corrosion resistivity.
- Excellent low-temperature resistance.
- Looks attractive.
- Good hot strength.
- Excellent ductility.
Description
Grade 302 / DIN 1.4310 / UNS S30200
Grade 302 stainless steel is another austenitic steel type. It is very tough and also features superior corrosion and dust resistivity. It is no-magnetic and cannot be hardened with heat treatment.
However, you can cold work it to increase the hardness. Most commonly used in its annealed form, the 302 steel is excellent for formability and fabrication.
It has more carbon content in its formula as compared to 304 stainless steel. This type of steel is very useful for forming different products involving flat washers using sheet materials or stamping. As it has high rust and corrosion resistance, it is a good choice for food and beverage applications.
Common Names: 302 Stainless Steel is also known as ATI 302.
Executive Standards:
- ASME SA 240
- ASME SA 666
- UNS S30200
- AMS 5516
- ASTM A 240
- ASTM A 666
- GE Aviation S-SPEC-35 AeDMS S-400
- RR SABRe Edition 2
- EN 1.4310
- S1000 / S-SPEC-1

Chemical Properties:
The 302 stainless steel has 0.15% carbon and 2% manganese. There is 0.045% of phosphorus in it, along with silicon and sulfur content being 0.75% and 0.03%, respectively. Apart from that, there is 17% to 19% of chromium, along with 8% to 10% of nickel in there. There is no nitrogen in 302 stainless steel, and it is replaced by 0.1% of aluminum.
Mechanical Properties:
The 302 stainless steel is more commonly used in its annealed form. You can also use it in its work-hardened form, as it has improved tensile strengths than the austenitic form. The minimum required mechanical properties at room temperature for plate, strip, or sheet according to the ASTM A240 and A666 standards are,
Property | Yield strength 0.2% offset | Tensile strength | Max hardness (Brinell) | Elongation per 2-inch |
302 and 304 | 30,000 psi, 205 MPa | 30,000 psi, 515 MPa | 201 | 40% |
304L | 25,000 psi, 170 MPa | 70,000 psi, 485 MPa | 201 | 40% |
305 | 25,000 psi, 170 MPa | 70,000 psi, 485 MPa | 183 | 40% |

Product Forms Available:
The 302 stainless steel is available in annealed and cold-worked forms.
Applications:
- Food and beverage application. Trailer bodies.
- Different pressure-containing applications.
- Cryogenic and sanitary applications.
Frequently Asked Questions:
- Does Type 302 SS corrode?
The Type 302 SS is even better when it comes to rusting and corrosion as compared to its 301 counterpart due to high carbon content and aluminum.
- What is the best application of Type 302 stainless steel?
Application in sanitary and food and beverage industry is the best one, and it is frequently used in this capacity
- Is 302 stainless steel magnetic?
No, the Type 302 SS is not magnetic. But with annealing, it becomes slightly magnetic.
