Description

Type 430 stainless steel is ferritic steel, with low carbon content and plain chromium. Type 430 provides good resistance to corrosion in environments that are mildly corrosive and good oxidation in conditions of elevated temperatures. Due to its resistance to nitric acid, it can be extremely useful in certain chemical applications.

Type 430 offers good formability and weldability, but it is not recommended for hard service. It shows good machining properties, although galling can happen.

Common Names: Stainless steel type 430 is commonly known as Chromium steel.

Key Features:

  • Plain chromium stainless steel with good corrosion resistance
  • Due to nitric acid resistance, it is used in several chemical applications
  • Resistance to corrosion is maximized in buffed or well-polished condition
  • Becomes brittle at room temperature if heated for a long time at temperatures between 752-1112 o This issue is solved by annealing
  • Good machining properties, but galling can happen
  • Difficult to execute rigorous operations, due to low ductility

Forms Available:

Stainless steel type 430 is available in different forms such as:

  • Sheet
  • Strip
  • Tube
  • Bar
  • Fittings & Flanges
  • Pipe
  • Plate

Applications:

Because of its properties, stainless steel type 430 has a wide range of applications including:

  • Automotive trim and lashing wires
  • Refrigerator cabinet panels
  • Dishwasher linings
  • Stove trim rings and chimney liners
  • Element supports and fasteners

Possible Alternatives Grades:

Type 430 stainless steel has some possible alternatives that can be used. Such as:

  • 430F – Higher machinability in bar form
  • 434 – Better pitting resistance
  • 316 – Better corrosion resistance with the hybrid capability of welding and cold forming.
  • 304 – Better weldability and ability to be cold formed
  • 3CR12 – Lower resistance to corrosion

FAQs:

  • How heat resistance is type 430 stainless steel be?

Type 430 stainless steel resists oxidation up to 1598 oF when used intermittently and up to 1499 oF when used continuously. The brittle that can appear when heated at temperatures between 752-1112 oF for a long time, can be surmounted by annealing.

  • How does type 430 behave in fabrication?

Type 430 stainless steel has a low rate of work hardening; hence it can be easily bent and formed. Due to the low ductility, it is difficult to execute rigorous operations. It can be cold worked, but for extreme cold working, intermediate annealing can be required.

  • How does type 430 respond to heat treatment?

Type 430 stainless steel can solution annealed by heating the steel at 1499-1553 oF. Then, it should be slowly cooled in the furnace to 1112 oF and quickly air-cooled. For sub-critical annealing, it should be heated to 1400-1499 oF, then air-cooled or water quenched.
